U.S. Mood Measured Through Twitter, 2006-2009

July 23, 2010 in Mental Health by psychcentral

U.S. Mood Measured Through Twitter, 2006-2009A group of researchers have published a simple word analysis of 300 million tweets (you know, those short, 140 character-maximum status updates from individuals) from Twitter and discovered something amazing — people are happier on the weekends, and before and after work. Yes, that’s right — people are happier when they are not working! It took three researchers from Northeastern University and two from Harvard Medical…

Introducing Life as You(th) Know It

July 12, 2010 in Mental Health by psychcentral

Introducing Life as You(th) Know ItI’m pleased to introduce our new blog, Life as You(th) Know It, by C.Y. (“Yan”) Chow. It is a blog about dealing with everything youths today have to deal with — from college and study woes, to relationship issues, family crises, friendship drama and everything in-between. I believe teens and young adults often have the greatest need for mental health and psychology information and resources, but…

Effective Social Media For The 55 or Better Crowd

June 11, 2010 in Healthy Aging by futureofaging

When many people think about social media today, they may think about teenagers sharing photos with their Facebook “friends” or restaurants using Twitter to promote their business with coupons and giveaways. There are many ways to use social media, but how can retirement communities use this new form…

Best of Our Blogs: June 4, 2010

June 4, 2010 in Mental Health by psychcentral

I was out on break for a bit, but now I’m back. I’m just wondering one thing: Did you miss me? Well the start of summer means lots of you are also on summer break — break from work, school, your favorite television show or maybe it’s more time with the kids. One thing you can count on is another week of top posts to read. Don’t worry if you were too busy barbecuing, partying or hanging out at…

Mental Health Hashtag List

June 2, 2010 in Mental Health by psychcentral

In a recent #mhsm (mental health and social media) chat on Twitter, we talked about the #mhm2010 hashtag used during Mental Health Month May 2010. Many organizations and tweeps successfully used it to share mental health information with a much wider network. During our wrap-up discussion on keeping momentum, other hashtags were mentioned. I volunteered to make a list and here’s what I found in use as of June 2. If you know of more, or start a new…

Therapists, Why Are You Using Social Networking?

May 15, 2010 in Mental Health by psychcentral

Therapists, Why Are You Using Social Networking? The debate around the problems associated with social networking for therapists has been heated and complex (see Google and Facebook, Therapists and Clients by Dr. John Grohol).  Regardless of this ongoing dialogue, the reality is many therapists are engaged in social networking and that’s likely not going to change any time soon. What I’m curious to know is not the problems with social networking —…

A Phone Call May Be As Effective As a Hug

May 12, 2010 in Mental Health by psychcentral

A Phone Call May Be As Effective As a HugAt least when it comes to your body’s physiological responses. If you’re a young girl. So says a new study that studied young girls’ release of the stress hormone cortisol as well as their levels of the hormone oxytocin — thought to be important in social bonding — after a stressful public presentation. One group of girls talked to their mom on the…

I love the sense of community that’s building over on our Twitter and Facebook pages. If you’re not already following us, please do so. The conversation is getting good! One of our Twitter followers this week called yesterday, “Therapy Thursday,” which I thought was quite catchy. I’d add to this and name it, “Thankful Thursday.” Thankful for all of you who I’m getting to know in the Psych Central community and who I admire for your strength, ambition and…

Equilibrium

April 30, 2010 in Mental Health by ifyouregoingthoughhellkeepgoing.blogspot

Right now, I am quiet. Grounded. At peace. All is right with the world, and I feel at one with the universe. At least until the fuzz ball wakes up from her nap and demands her supper. But right now all is as it should be. My father is home, resting. He is as fragile as a day old colt. Which makes me wonder because he is looking forward to watching the Kentucky Derby tomorrow. My dad and horses.
