It IS a small world…

July 28, 2010 in Healthy Aging, Uncategorized by futureofaging

What story could you possibly tell that would include St. Louis, Missouri, a small Kentucky town and Columbia, South Carolina?  Apparently, one about Still Hopes Retirement Community! One of Still Hopes’ trustees was recently in St. Louis with her husband. At breakfast in the hotel one morning, she got into a conversation with a lady who she did not know and who was traveling from a small Kentucky town. In conversation, the stranger learned that our trustee was from Columbia…

Dream a Little Dream

July 18, 2010 in Healthy Aging, Uncategorized by futureofaging

Last week I had the opportunity to visit with the senior leadership team of Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge. Over lunch, we discussed the biggest challenges this stand alone CCRC overlooking Charlottesville faces. Not surprising, theirs are similar to many AAHSA members: aging buildings, occupancy, developing capacity, growing endowment.  As our discussions unfolded I asked the group a new question, “if you could dream anything for Westminster-Canterbury, what would it be?”  President and CEO Gary Selmeczi grabbed his pen and…

Upcycling

July 5, 2010 in Healthy Aging, Uncategorized by futureofaging

With all of the “going green” efforts taking place, I must admit that I was surprised to learn a new term upon my recent visit to Still Hopes Retirement Community in Columbia, SC.  After having dinner with Danny Sanford, friend, mentor and Executive Director/CEO of Still Hopes, Danny asked if I wanted to see their new art gallery.  We turned a corner and there was a beautifully lit area highlighting the…

Washington Update: Tax Extender Bill Continues to Linger

June 21, 2010 in Healthy Aging, Uncategorized by futureofaging

This week the battle continues.  After several attempts failed at cloture on the American Workers, State, and Business Relief Act (H.R. 4213), or the Tax Extenders Bill, each time with a slightly revised and downsized bill, the U.S. Senate essentially gave up last week. However, it did gave in to the doctors and voted to extend until Nov. 30, 2010, Medicare’s Physician Sustainable Growth Rate (also known as the Doc Fix) with a 2.2% increase.  This applies to nursing homes’…

Food for Thought: Arbor Acres Hosts Food Fair

June 16, 2010 in Healthy Aging, Uncategorized by futureofaging

On my recent trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., I visited Arbor Acres, a member continuing care retirement community (CCRC) dedicated to serving senior adults.  Imagine my delight when I discovered they were hosting a food fair in my honor!  OK, not exactly in my honor, more like a coincidence. As David Piner, Arbor Acres CEO, and I toured the community we were overwhelmed by the amount of food…

It’s Never Too Late

June 15, 2010 in Healthy Aging, Uncategorized by futureofaging

….to start something new. Last night, I came home after a particularly challenging yoga session to this article  that a grandson wrote about his 90-year-old grandmother’s first yoga class.  His grandmother has severe arthritis and macular degeneration. A walk down the street is a challenge for her, so it’s not surprising she was skeptical of yoga. That changed after her hour-long class. At the beginning, grandma had trouble sitting on the floor without help.…
