Funny Friday

September 3, 2010 in Healthy Aging, Uncategorized by futureofaging

I wouldn’t be surprised if most offices are as quiet as the AAHSA headquarters this pre-Labor Day Friday. Here is a video that might make you hear some laughs. It’s an invocation that Mary Maxwell gave at Home Instead Senior Care’s recent convention. This somewhat solemn moment turned into a stand-up routine about aging. It’s already gotten 1.5 million views on YouTube. Check it out for yourself, and share it with a friend or colleague who needs a laugh. Share/Bookmark

Tea may be just about the perfect beverage: refreshing, invigorating, and (contrary to conventional wisdom), a good way to stay hydrated. Plus it's full of good-for-you polyphenols, catechins, and other valuable antioxidants that help stave off ovarian and other cancers, osteoporosis, heart disease, and even gum disease!  Here are three ways to squeeze more health benefits from that tea bag:

South Dakota Member Brings Together Children, Clients, Chickens and Candidates

September 2, 2010 in Healthy Aging by futureofaging

During the height of campaign season, there’s all sorts of political events taking place. However, I’m not sure I’ve heard of one like the United Retirement Center  (URC) in Bookings, South Dakota hosted last month. URC hosted seven political candidates, as well as staff member from Sen. Tim Johnson’s (D-S.D.) office for a intergenerational event that brought together their nursing home residents and kids from their child development center. This isn’t that…

Gerotranscendence

September 2, 2010 in Healthy Aging by iahsa.wordpress.com

Dr. Lars Tornstam, a Swedish sociologist, has coined the term ‘gerotranscendence’, which he describes as a shift from a materialistic and rational view of the world to a more cosmic and transcendent one, normally accompanied by an increase in life satisfaction. His point is that as we age our values and interests change and mature, causing some changes in behavior which can sometimes be mistaken for an indication of decline, physically or mentally. Paula Span in the The New Old…

Assessing Frailty Risk in the Elderly

August 31, 2010 in Healthy Aging by iahsa.wordpress.com

Researchers at Trinity College Dublin have developed a new assessment tool that provides a reliable and practical way of assessing an elderly person’s risk for frailty.    Other tools have been available for a number of years but were generally not readily applicable in routine primary care practice. SHARE-FI [Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe Frailty Instrument] seeks to provide community practitioners with a valid and simple tool to measure the level of frailty in individuals older than 50…

Nursing Home Staff Get Honest with Grassley

August 31, 2010 in Healthy Aging by futureofaging

Grassley addresses a group of residents during his visit. When a legislator visits, it’s easy to get caught up in the celebration and forget to talk about both the challenges and opportunities that come with helping older adults. That didn’t happen at the Good Samaritan Society’s nursing home in Manson, Iowa.  Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) visited the organization last week and he got an honest take from staff about their work…
